Ubehebe Crater complex at the north end of Death Valley

The Ubehebe Crater complex is a geologically very recent set of “maars”, a type of low-relief broad crater. It’s caused by magma invading the water table, causing explosive eruptions, not lava flows. This happened only about 2100 years ago. People have inhabited the region for 9000 years.

The place is visually striking, so we’ve visited several times to take photos.
